Who is my ideal customer?

To answer this question. It's likely that your new customers will have many of the characteristics of your current ones. Together, online, we research the similarities the companies are in, where they are located, or how big they are (in annual sales or number of employees, etc.)

Create smaller, more targeted lists:

Example:  The 8-digit SIC codes offer thousands more industry choices that the more common 4-digit codes.  These extra four digits can mean the difference between a large vague list of restaurants, and a small focused list of Chinese Restaurants--saving you time and money by preventing you from making calls and mailing to a lot of inappropriate companies.

Fine tune your list:

Before settling on a list you can examine the companies in it.  Do they fit the profile of your best customers?  Are there enough of them, or too many?  If the list isn't right, change it, Include additional industries, change the geography, narrow the focus--whatever is required.  You can even check the companies in your list name by name, deleting current customers, or anyone else that you don't consider a qualified prospect.

Be realistic about the data:

It's frustrating to see meticulously designed, thoroughly planned, expensive direct mail pieces returned by the Postal Service for incorrect addresses, or watch your telemarketers waste time dialing wrong numbers.  However errors can occur even though respected data vendors are used.  Mailing list deliverability typically ranges from 80% to 95%.  Deliverability of any particular list will vary depending on Region and Industry. Vendor warrants 80%.
